CIRCLE OF POWER AND RESPECT

My favorite tool to use. Time and time again, this developmental designs strategy has shown me that creating community in the classroom is the number one way to find success in all other areas.

WHAT IS IT?

Developmental Designs Tool

OVERVIEW

Circle of Power and Respect (CPR) is a tool that can be used in advisory or in your classroom for every day. Developmental Designs came up with this tool but it is something that I have taken really strongly to in my classroom. Every morning we start my class with a quick CPR.

There are 5 components of CPR.

DEVELOPMENTAL DESIGNS

This is not a tool I made up! Developmental Designs is an amazing website that puts together advisory tools for their students. This is one tool that I have just absolutely fallen in love with. I am putting a quick explanation of how it works and what exactly it looks like but if you go to the website itself you can get a bunch more information on it! Click here to see it in action.

COMPONENTS

1. Daily News

-This is to tell students about what is happening for the day. You can also use it as an opportunity to ask students their news for the day.

-CPR goes in a circle, you can say this at the beginning but circle back to it at the end to wrap up the CPR and transition into your lesson for the day.

2. Check-in Question

- This question is a quick answer that students can type in the chat if online, or quickly answer when they come into the door during an in person class. Its goal is to wake students up and get them thinking!

3. Greet

- Everyone loves to be greeted when coming to class. When other students as well as you know their name, they feel more valued and important.

- This can be a quick question that is answered in 1 sentence or less. It can also be something like giving high fives or handshakes. It all depends on your classroom.

4. Share

- The share can be a voluntary, open-share, you can call on students, or it can be done in breakout rooms. The point is for the students to talk about something that they are interested in. It allows them to connect and bring some interesting points to the table.

5. Activity

The activity can also be anything your students are up for. I like to keep this to something that is the most fun. This is also a space for you to integrate content you will be using for the day as a fun transition rather than a harsh jump into learning.

SAMPLE CPR

1. Daily News

- Hi everyone, today we will be reviewing last week's activity and working on some new content for our essays. I am so excited to see what we come up with!

2. Check-in Question

- What is your favorite song?

3. Greet

- Say hello and how are you to someone in class using their name. Ask them, what's the news?

4. Share

- Do you think a hot dog is a sandwich?

5. Activity

- Pictionary with characters or vocab words from the book!
